HMCS TRENTONIAN’s ships company gather around the corvette’s gangway after the wounded from the damaged cable ship HMTS Monarch had been moved ashore in Portsmouth on 13 June 1944. There will be no shore leave and this will be as close to dry land as the men will get for some time, as Invasion operations are in full swing. You can see the ship’s mascot, AB O’Brian in the arms of one of the sailors next to the gangway. Monarch and TRENTONIAN had been accidentally attacked by USS PLUNKETT during the night. The cable ship had been extensively damaged by the American destroyer, killing three of her crew and wounding many others.
