For many of the younger crew members in HMCS TRENTONIAN this merchant ship, possibly the Dutch freighter SS Moderita, was their first taste of why they were escorting convoys. She was torpedoed by a German U-boat on the North Atlantic, blowing a large hole in her bow, she was able to make her way to the safe haven of St. John’s, NF. March 1944.
