HMS MALABAR was established in 1939, the island was an active operational base for RN and RCN escorts in the Atlantic. A Canadian training base was established in 1944 at Convict’s Bay St. Georges, named HMCS SOMERS ISLE. During this time 125 RCN and 12 RN escort ships and crews underwent working up evolution’s to increase their skills and readiness to fight.
