May 26, 2011 by Roger Litwiller

On 24 May 2011, Roger was invited by Mayor Neil Ellis, to address the council of the City of Belleville at the regular council meeting.

At that time Roger turned over to the City’s Archive his research that has been collected to write the chapter on HMCS BELLEVILLE in his book Warships of the Bay of Quinte. The raw research data included, press releases from the Navy, newspaper clippings, incident reports, radio messages, fighting equipment reports, and all the photos used in the book.

Roger had collected the material from several sources including archives and museums in Belleville, Kingston, Ottawa and Halifax. With donating the material to the Belleville Archives, Roger stated, “now the story of this ship is in one place, so others can use it easily.”

During his brief address Roger praised the city and council for having the foresight to create a new archives and their continued support of local museums and the Belleville Historical Society.

Roger concluded, with this simple advice,

“Anyone who embraces their past and learns their history, has the ability to understand the present, and the power to influence their future.”
