HMCS BRAS D’OR, Anti-Submarine Trawler, foundered in the Gulf of St. Lawrence during a storm on 19 October 1940. There were no survivors from her ship’s company of five officers and twenty-five sailors.
BRAS’D’OR had sailed from Clark City on Quebec’s North Shore to shadow the Romanian steamship Ingerner N. Vlassopol. The freighter had sailed from Baie Comeau, PQ. for Sydney, NS. It was feared the Romanian crew would attempt to sail for occupied Europe. While in the Gulf of St. Lawrence Vlassopol reported she and BRAS’D’OR had switched on navigation lights during the severe storm and the last they saw the trawler was at 0350 on 19 October, when BRAS’D’OR’s lights suddenly disappeared.
